Canine Giardia Lamblia Antigen Test

The Canine Giardia lamblia Antigen Test is a rapid diagnostic tool designed to detect Giardia lamblia antigen in dogs. Giardia is a protozoan parasite that causes gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, weight loss, and dehydration. It is a common intestinal infection in dogs, particularly in puppies and those exposed to contaminated water sources.

Mechanism of Action

The Giardia lamblia Antigen Test is based on lateral flow immunoassay technology.

  • The test device contains antibodies that are specific to Giardia lamblia antigens.
  • When the prepared sample is added to the test cassette, Giardia antigens bind to the antibodies labeled with a color reagent.
  • The immune complex moves across the membrane via capillary action.
  • If Giardia antigens are present, a colored band will appear in the test line (T).
  • A control line (C) will also appear, indicating the test has been conducted properly.

The presence or absence of the test line helps interpret the result.

FAQ

When should I use this test?

This test is ideal for diagnosing Giardia infections in dogs that exhibit symptoms like diarrhea, vomiting, and weight loss, particularly when the infection is suspected to be from contaminated water.

What is the difference between this test and a Giardia antibody test?

This test detects the Giardia antigen in the dog's stool, which is a direct sign of an active infection, whereas antibody tests detect the body's immune response to the parasite, which may indicate past exposure.

Can Giardia infections cause severe illness in dogs?

Yes. While many dogs with Giardia infections may only show mild symptoms, severe cases, especially in puppies or immunocompromised dogs, can result in significant dehydration, weight loss, and gastrointestinal distress.

Does a negative result rule out Giardia infection?

No. Giardia infections can sometimes be intermittent, meaning the parasite may not always be present in the stool. It is advisable to retest after a few days or use other confirmatory diagnostic methods if symptoms persist.
